The Royal Canadian Legion is central to many communities and our local branch is no exception. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 112 Lawrencetown supports veterans and their families when needed through the Poppy Fund. They raise funds through the poppy campaign in the fall and a door to door campaign, as well as selling wreaths which are laid on Remembrance Day during the service at COGS (The Centre of Geographic Sciences) on November 11. The Legion is are able to do this with the support of the community and the military from CFB Greenwood. Our Cenotaph is located at the Lawrencetown & District Fire Department.
The Legion is also active in schools. They offer two bursaries to students in local high schools and take part in the Poster Contest with the Lawrencetown Consolidated School.
Their general meeting is held on the third Monday of the month except for July and August when the branch is run by the executive.
The folks at the Legion stay busy throughout the year. They offer a dart league every Thursday night from September to May and host meat darts on Saturday nights, which is open to everyone! In the summer, they have a Washer Toss League on Thursdays, instead of darts. They also have an open mike night every Friday from 7pm to 9pm.
For the past several years they have been having Youth Darts, ages 8 to 19 on Sunday afternoons. Several of the players have joined Team Nova Scotia and have participated at Nationals with a good showing. Dawn Acker is the coach for our branch as well as the sports officer.
They will be starting up our dances on September 9 with a local DJ.
Our building is shared with the Lawrencetown & Area Seniors Association and the Lions Club.
